The Blake Plateau and Carolina Trough regions exhibit an intriguing juxtaposition between continental extension and seafloor spreading. My doctoral research utilizes marine seismic tomography, bathymetry, and magnetic anomaly data collected via fieldwork on the R/V Marcus Langseth and the R/V Neil Armstrong. The intersection of these results permits a more nuanced understanding of the rift-drift behavior of the Blake Plateau region's crustal lithosphere, as well as the possible mantle-layer magmatism that drives this phenomenon.
